Directors Summary

Niles D. Perlas, CRNA, Chairman, founded FAMI in 1999 to help the poor in the Philippines . Founded and Managed Goldie Brangman, Anesthesia Review Course in New York City from 1990 to 1994. Niles has also been Chief CRNA at two major hospitals in Manhattan for the past 20 years. Together with her husband, Niles has donated in number of projects for the including, artesan well in her province of Nueva Ecija at Pias, General Tinio through PEACE. Niles has also served as a board member for two years “Gift of Life.”

Nicholas Silao, CRNA, MA, Graduate of Harlem Hospital School of Anesthesia, BSN and Masters Graduate of Columbia University . Nick collects 19th century American Art and enjoys to trading puts and calls. He is also the founder of of Anesthesia Providers in the Tri-State area.

Administrator

Leus Perlas, Administrator since FAMI inception. Leus performs all operational management and logistical coordination of FAMI and mission. He works as a VP in a real estate investment company in New York for the past 20 years and previously in other management position at Hotel Intercontinental and Mitsubishi. Together with Niles and daughter Kristine Elizabeth they are currently working and living in Manhattan . Leus has served as director and the board in a number companies and non-profit organization.

Reynaldo Gamboa Alejandro (RIP 2009) was a New York-based Manila-born writer and book author. He has written 40 books including the award-winning LAMESA, ADOBO BOOK, and SAYAW. A multi-awarded dancer, choreographer and culinary expert, he has lectured in the United States and Europe. He is the communications director of FAMI and the president of KCC Innovations, Inc. Reynaldo Alejandro, Board 2000-2004. Ronnie passed away August 2009 in New York City.

Rowena Almendral, RN, was a volunteer on the 1^st Surgical Mission in 1999 and board member in 1999-2000

Lestrino C. Baquiran, MD, Internist and cardiologist with a private practice located in Central Park West. He is on the attending staff at Lenox Hill Hospital and St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital . Dr. Baquiran graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. He has been President of the Philippine Economic and Cultural Endowment (PEACE-USA). He is a Board Member from 2004-2008. He received the FAMI Humanitarian Award in 2005

James Beckman, MD, has been a supporter and adviser since its early days and has served the board on 2001 to 2008. Jim is an attending anesthesiologist at Hospital for Special Surgery. He was second group volunteers in 2000 and 2001.

Terry Bernabe, CRNA is a founding member of FAMI and secretary in 1999. Terry was a volunteer and board member on the 1^st Surgical Mission.

Shelly Ridon Castellano, volunteer and board member on 2001 on FAMI’s 3^rd Surgical Medical Mission with her spouse of Dr. Michael Castellano 2001 surgeon.

Angelica Cu, RN, MS, has served FAMI as Vice Chairman (2003-06) and Secretary (2002-03). She works at New York Presbyterian Hospital since 1991 and currently employed as Electrophysiology Nurse in Critical Care Department. Angelica has completed Orientation to Medical Missions in Developing Countries at Mercy Ships in Lindale, Texas in 1998. She is active in other community programs.

Nelson Co, MD, CRNA is a founding member of FAMI in 1999. Nelson performs cataract surgical mission for over ten years and is active in FILAM NY communities. (1999-2002)

Ma. Linda T.Gamboa, RN has served FAMI as board member from 2003-2008 .She is a graduate of St.Paul's University, Iloilo City.Linda is currently working as part-time nursing supervisor at Lafayette Medical Management.She enjoys traveling ,dancing and volunteering .

Belen Gonzales (2001-2003), active member of the FILAM community, past president of Lions and served as Governor of Lions NY.

Carmen Gregorio, worked for the United Nations Development Programme in New York , from 1968-1978 as secretary and external affairs assistant, and from 1979-2003, as a Procurement Associate at the United Nations Office for Project Services. Joined FAMI in 2005 and volunteered at its 10th Medical Mission in March 2008.

Miriam Kho, RN, graduated from Philippine Christian University Mary Johnston College of Nursing in 1979. She works at Beth Israel Medical Center Philips Ambulatory Recovery Room. A youth group teacher at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in New Jersey . Miriam is mother of 3 girls and whose interest includes cooking, home decorating, bowling, and bible study. FAMI Board on 2000-2008.

Chris Edmonds, MD is an anesthesiologist at Hospital for Special Surgery and was part of the 1^st Surgical Team in 1999. Board 2000

Gayle Lara, board Member since 2003. Co-Vice Chair from 2006 to 2008. Worked at the Dept. of Foreign Affairs Office in Manila from 1967 and as Attache’ at the Philippine Mission to the UN from 1973 to 1983. Represented the in International Conferences, among others: Decade of Women; UNICEF; and Committee Against Apartheid. Presently working at the Corporate Tax Department of Canon USA, Inc.

Teresita Laforteza, a civic minded Manila- New York transplant who help FAMI on its first two surgical missions in 1999 and 2000 as a volunteer and board member.

David Lee, MD, attending anesthesiologist at Hospital for Special Surgery, volunteer on 2005, 2002 and 2000 missions and has been a FAMI voting board member since 2000.

Sony Mabaquiao RN, twenty eight (28) years of varied work experience as a registered nurse, in a multinational/cross-cultural settings such as the Philippines-Asia , Libya, North Africa/ Riyadh,Saudi Arabia - Middle East and New York, USA. Seventeen (17) years of solid critical care nurse experience extensively in Cardiothoracic ICU/ Open Heart Recovery Room Unit. Nine (9) years of teaching experience as a BLS/ACLS instructor under American Heart Association (AHA) NYC, Affiliate Volunteer member of Aloha Medical Mission for six years and Filipino American Medical Inc. (FAMI) for three years. Sony has served as FAMI Secretary from 2006 to 2008.

Maria Mamawal 1999-2003 Vice Chair and Secretary 1999 was founding member of FAMI. Maria helped organize FAMI earlier missions. She prepared necessary permits and documents with assistance of the Office of Vice President which supported medical missions as part of its program. Maria is active member of the local FILAM communities in New York City .

Crispina Nabua RN, volunteer on 1st Surgical Mission in 1999 and again in 2007, was board member in 2000.

Betty Piracha RN, ONC, Graduated from Riverside General School of Nursing in Bacolod City class of 1967. Betty has 10 years cardiovascular experience before switching to orthopedics. She is presently working at the Hospital for Special Surgery Ambulatory Post Anesthesia Care Unit as CN II. She was voted into the FAMI board in 2007. She was joined by her daughter Julie, also an RN in the 2008 FAMI mission.

Bennie Muldong, RN, has been FAMI Treasurer from 1999 to 2008 and founding member. Bennie graduated from Central Luzon Educational Center School of Nursing in 1968. She is active New York 1199 union and is a Delegate since 1986. Bennie likes to travel and does volunteer work.

Marissa Olmos, RN has been with FAMI since its inception and has been active in ensuring the proper dispensing of all donated medications in the Internal Medicine arm of FAMI medical missions. Marissa is currently employed in the Recovery Room of the Westchester County Medical Center , Valhalla, NY but was a loyal ER nurse of the Cabrini Medical Center & St. Vincent's Midtown Hospital from 1991-2007.

Ignie Ocampo, MT , FAMI since 2001, graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Public Health. She works in New York City hospitals as a microbiologist since coming to the NY . She is a working mother of two grown children. Ignie enjoys dancing and a member of ASM. Board 2003-2008

Amy Piguerra, RN, has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 1980. She works at Hospital for Special Surgery for the past 13 ½ years. Presently holds the Acting Nurse Manager position in the Ambulatory Surgery Center – PACU. Amy Received the Employee of the Year Award for 2003. Likes to travel and enjoys dancing. Amy has served as FAMI Secretary (2001-2002,2003-2006), Board (2007-2008)

Susana Sarangaya has been with FAMI since 2002. She went to the as an exchange student in Youth for Understanding in her 4th year high school, and then went to college at St. John's University in New York , majoring in Quantitative Analysis. Sugar currently works in the financial services as a Business Analyst in Pershing, division of Bank of New York Mellon, since 1997. Prior to Pershing, she worked in Fidelity Investments and Moody's Investors.

Marietta Santos , 2003 – 2007 FAMI Philippine Coordinator. Marietta is a social and civic leader who is active in many organizations in the including Verlanie Foundation. She is mother of three grown daughters and a son.

Maria R. San Agustin, RN,MA,GNP/ANP, has served FAMI as a board member from 2007-2008. Currently employed as a Care Manager in Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx, New York and works part time as a Nurse Practitioner in a private medical office.

Penny Saulog RN was a volunteer 1^st mission and a board member on 2^nd mission in 2000.

Cephas Swamidoss, MD , MS, MPH is a board-certified anesthesiologist on staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Prior to joining the Department, he served as a staff obstetrical anesthesiologist and Residency Director for the Anesthesia Training Program at the New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Medical Center . He has an active interest in educational programs, clinical outcomes research as well as overseas medical missions

Rome Reyes Velayo, BSMT (ASCP) – works at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Queens as general laboratory supervisor since 1978. Two term president of New York Manila Lions Club. Romey was travel coordinator of FAMI from 2002 to 2007. He Loves to travel and enjoys different kinds of food, restaurants and broadways. (2001-2008)

Sarah Vidad, has been active member of FAMI since 1999 as part of the logistical support staff and administrator. Sarah graduated in Industrial Engineering from the University of Santo Tomas . She has more than 15 years experience in the footwear industry in technology department.

Tony Lara, Administrative Support. Currently CFO and Controller of a specialized flooring company for commercial and industrial buildings all over the tri-state area. Held positions as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for private and public companies for the past 25 years.

Maria Teresa Victoria "Maite" Santos (RIP 2008) called herself FAMI's enforcer. Since 2002, she tangled every year with the Philippine bureaucracy to lay the groundwork for the annual FAMI Missions. For months in advance, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that things went smoothly: from the team's temporary PRC licenses, to their Bureau of Food & Drugs and Customs clearances, to the hotel and travel arrangements for the post-mission R&R. She loved what she did and the people she worked with loved her too.

Josee Perlas Mayo (RIP 2007) was a supporter of FAMI since its foundation. She was always available to help FAMI with government agencies to overcome “red tape” in its missions this especially true in the early missions of FAMI. Josee monitored every mission from the beginning to end, she help secure mission sites with military assistance through her network of friends. She was a supporter of the Philippine’s army soldiers foundation and wife of Lt General Victor Mayo (Ret) PMA 66. Josee graduated from Assumption College and founded Philippine Modeling Academy in early 60.
